Sustainability is a systemic concept related to the continuity of the economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects of the human society. It is proposed as a mean to configure the civilization and human activity in such a way that the society, all its members and their economies can fulfill its needs and express its biggest potential in the present, and at the same time preserve the biodiversity and the natural ecosystems, planning and acting in a way to reach pro-efficiency in the endless maintenance of those ideals.
Sustentability includes several levels of organization, from the local neighborhood to the whole planet. In order to be sustentable, a human action must comply with 4 basic requirements. It must be: ecologically right; economically viable; socially fair; and culturally accepted
Putting it in simple terms, sustentability is providing the best for people and for the environment, either now and in the indefinite future. According to Brundtland, in the end of 1987, sustentability is "providing the needs of the present generation without affecting the ability of the future generations to fulfill theirs." It is very similar to the native American's philosophy, who said that their leaders should always consider the effects of theirs actions in their dependents after seven future generations.
Recently, the world scenario has been affected by unbalances in sustentability, in all its aspects: ecological, economical, social and cultural. The present panel intends to discuss the role the new media plays in sustentability and its several aspects, and also in which ways the Arts could help to increase awareness about the necessity of global sustainable thoughts and actions.
